Athletic Injuries & Sports Performance

Athletic Injuries and Sports Performance

Throughout my 38 years in practice I’ve treated athletes from almost every sport – running, golf, cycling, skiing, tennis, Ultimate Frisbee, ice hockey, field hockey, swimming, curling (yes, curling!) boxing, martial arts, racquetball, squash, pickleball, track and field, body building, baseball, softball, basketball, equestrian arts, and more.

I enjoy treating athletic injuries because every sport has it’s unique challenges – changing direction (700 times per game for soccer players), generating power, overhead throwing, repetitive motions, issues of gait, core control…you can imagine, the list is quite long.

Some injuries are straight-forward - you collide with someone on the soccer field, you roll an ankle on the court, or you injure a knee on the ski slopes, etc. But most injuries that I see are caused by some part of your body compensating for another part of your body that is weak or tight. The body takes the path of least resistance when it moves, and if it can’t move the way it should, some other part of the body further up or down your kinetic chain will become overstressed and eventually break down.

An example would be a runner with weak hip control. Faulty biomechanics causes them to put too much force into the muscles, ligaments and tendons in their knee, ankle and foot…and they develop injuries like plantar fasciitis or shin splints. This kind of dynamic plays out in many different ways with athletes.

The goal is always to find the “upstream” cause of your problem. We do that by taking a deep dive into how you move - looking for areas of tightness, weakness and altered motor control, and then connecting that to your symptoms.

The strategy of evaluating and treating movement issues is useful not just for treating athletic injuries, but also for enhancing athletic performance. Could you be a better golfer if you had more flexibility in your hips, spine and shoulders? Could you run faster if you were a little better at controlling the muscles in your hips? Could you add some power to your tennis game by strengthening your core?

An estimated 90% of all world-class athletes routinely use chiropractic care to prevent injuries and boost their performance. All professional football teams employ on-staff chiropractors. So do 72% of PGA golfers and the majority of NBA, MLB and NHL teams.

Feel free to contact my office if you have any questions about a particular injury or if you’re interested in increasing your performance in your sport.
