Foot/Ankle Pain and Plantar Fasciitis

Foot and Ankle Pain and Plantar Fasciitis

Foot and ankle pain can be very disabling. When you have an issue with your feet, it gets magnified by the 5000-10,000 steps that you take every day. In addition to your feet hurting, that stress gets transferred up your “kinetic chain,” potentially affecting your knees, hips and back.

Like I do in other parts of the body, we’ll do a careful examination to evaluate your biomechanics, muscle strength, joint movement, gait and movement patterns, and ligament and tendon health.

Depending on what we find we’ll use some combination of manipulation of your foot/ankle, strengthening exercises, gait retraining, myofascial release, stretching, massage, kinesiotaping, and footwear recommendations to help alleviate your pain and disability.

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a degenerative condition in which repetitive microtrauma causes an irritation and breakdown of the connective tissue (plantar fascia) on the bottom of your feet.

Every year in the US 1 million people are treated for this painful condition. A 2018 study of 174 plantar fasciitis patients that were followed for 15 years found that 80% had symptoms 12 months after the initial injury, and 44% had symptoms 15 years later.

To increase the chances of successful treatment, the first thing I do is a careful assessment. The stability, strength and stiffness of your foot will determine the best treatment options for you. While patients with weak/unstable feet require specific strengthening exercises (Peroneal and foot intrinsic muscles), people with very stiff feet usually require various kinds of stretching (plantar fascia, calf) and massage. For both types I may also do Graston myofascial release, manipulation of the ankle and foot and kinesiotaping.

Of course there are many causes of foot and ankle pain. For some of them, I refer patients to a good podiatrist. Sometimes we will both treat the patient.
