Fall Prevention for Older Adults

Stretching After a Long Walk

Fall Prevention Program

In his 1994 textbook, the gerontologist Bernard Isaacs states “It takes a child one year to acquire independent movement and 10 years to acquire independent mobility. An older person can lose both in a day”

We all know people who have had falls that have very negatively affected their lives. And, we’ve all heard the statistics.

  • Every year almost 40% of people over the age of 70 fall at least once.
  • One in 5 of these falls results in serious injury
  • In the U.S., this translates to 36 million falls, 8 million injuries, 3 million visits to the emergency room, 900,000 hospitalizations, and 300,000 fractured hips.
  • Nearly 25% of the people who fracture their hip will be dead in one year, and 50% of them will be unable to return to their prior level of function.

I don’t want you to be included in these statistics! Fortunately, there’s something we can do together to make that possible.

While there are a percentage of falls that occur because of medication, visual issues, and various neurological causes, most occur because of issues related to: age-related declines in strength, balance, and the flexibility/strength/structure and neurological health of your feet.

Fortunately, using a series of evidence-based assessments these weaknesses can be measured and quantified. Once we’ve found your specific issues we can put together a series of customized exercises that you can use to strengthen your hips, legs, feet and balance. In doing so, you can very significantly decrease your chance of falling and becoming a statistic.

We usually do this over two office visits. During the first visit we go through your history, do and exam and other testing. On the second visit we review all of your exercises.

I understand that it’s nearly impossible for anyone to remember a series of exercises that we review in the office. To avoid that pitfall, I use a library of exercise videos to prescribe corrective rehab exercises to my patients. After your assessment I’ll send you a group of online videos so you have references for all of your exercises.
